Pure silver is a very soft metal and does not have sufficient durability for most jewelry. Sterling silver, most commonly used in jewelry, is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% alloy, usually copper. The added alloy makes the sterling silver ideal for jewelry -- malleable yet durable enough to withstand daily usage. The combination of malleability and durability enable sterling silver to be shaped and finished in a myriad of ways. Fine silver is 99.9% pure silver, the most pure silver commonly available. Although too soft to be used as the primary metal in most jewelry, Fine silver plating adds luster, a whiter, brighter finish and slight reduction in tarnishing. The Fine silver plating on this chain will last for years under most circumstances. Eventually, like all plating, the Fine silver will wear away revealing the sterling silver that gives this chain its durability.
