A quality hat provides shade, shelter and comfort while retaining its shape through years of wear. It can be brushed, cleaned and, depending on the material, reshaped or renovated. A good hat also becomes more personal with use. The shape settles to the wearer, the felt or leather develops character, and the hat becomes an old friend rather than something to be replaced every season.

Quality does not mean that a hat must be treated delicately. A well-made outdoor hat is intended to be worn. There is no need to baby a quality hat, but if you treat it with understanding, it will look better and last longer.

Begin with how and where you expect to wear the hat. Consider the weather, the amount of sun or rain you encounter, and whether the hat will be used for work, travel, walking, special occasions or everyday wear. Then consider the material, brim width, crown height and style.

Fit is more important than almost anything else. Heads come in all sizes and in a surprising variety of shapes. Measure your head carefully before ordering, and check the fit as soon as the hat arrives. Our Hat Sizing page explains how to measure and how a properly fitted hat should feel.

It is often best to choose a useful, versatile shape for a first hat rather than an extreme style. A medium-width brim and a crown that suits the shape of your face will serve well in many situations. If you are uncertain, please phone us. No. Price may reflect the material, the amount of handwork, the fineness of the finish, where the hat is made and how difficult it is to produce. It does not follow that the most expensive hat is the best choice for every wearer.

A durable fur felt hat may be the better value for years of outdoor use. A lighter Panama may be more comfortable in summer. A wool felt hat may provide the appearance and warmth wanted at a lower price. The best hat is the one that suits its intended use, fits properly and is worn often.

A quality hat begins with good material and sound construction. The felt or straw should be appropriate to the purpose of the hat. The crown and brim should hold their intended shape, the sweatband should be comfortable and securely fitted, and the trimming should be neatly applied.

With felt hats, quality also shows in the density, resilience and finish of the felt. Good fur felt can withstand rain and repeated wear, and it can usually be steamed and reshaped. Good wool felt should be evenly finished and firmly blocked, although it will not generally have the same resistance to weather and repeated reshaping as fur felt.

A quality hat should feel balanced on the head. It should not be so heavy that it becomes tiring, nor so lightly constructed that it loses its shape under ordinary use.

That depends on the material, the construction, the amount of wear and how the hat is treated. A good fur felt or leather hat may give many years, and sometimes decades, of service. Wool felt hats generally will not withstand as much rain, renovation or hard use as fur felt hats. Panama hats are lighter and more vulnerable to crushing, moisture and repeated flexing, but a well-cared-for Panama can also be enjoyed for several seasons.

No hat is indestructible. Perspiration, dirt, pinching the crown, drying a wet hat with heat and leaving a hat in a hot vehicle can shorten its life. Proper handling and storage make a considerable difference.

For an all-purpose outdoor hat that may encounter both sun and rain, fur felt is difficult to beat. For a lighter hat in hot, dry weather, consider a Panama. Wool felt is useful for cool-weather wear when prolonged rain and hard outdoor use are not expected. Leather hats are well suited to rugged casual wear and conditions where a hat may be brushed against branches or packed with outdoor equipment.

Style also matters. A broad brim gives more protection from sun and rain. A narrower brim is often easier in a vehicle and may feel more at home in town. A high crown provides more air space above the head, while a low crown may suit a smaller face but can be uncomfortable if it touches the top of the head.

List All Hats

Choose the material according to the conditions in which the hat will be worn. Fur felt is durable, weather resistant and adaptable. Wool felt is warm and attractive but less resistant to heavy rain and repeated reshaping. Panama hats are light and cool for summer but should be kept out of the rain. Leather hats are rugged and practical, though generally warmer than straw in hot weather. Cloth hats such as the Airflow Hat or Aussie Surf hat can be excellent choices for casual wear,combining sun protection and easy care.

There is no one material best for every purpose. Many regular hat wearers keep a felt hat for cooler or wet weather and a Panama or other straw hat for hot, dry days.

Fur felt is made from the fine under-fur of animals such as rabbits and hares, not from the long, coarse hair commonly called fur. The fibers have tiny barb-like projections on their surfaces. During felting, these fibers lock together to form a dense, strong material that can be blocked into a hat.  The tightly interlocked fibers leads to one of the lightest fabics known in relation to its tensile strength.

Good fur felt combines strength with flexibility. It can resist rain, retain its shape and respond well to steam and professional renovation. These qualities have made fur felt a traditional material for outdoor, dress and Western hats.

Fur felt hats such as our Akubras are generally longer lasting, lighter weight, thinner, smoother and more durable than wool felt hats.

Wool felt is made from sheep’s wool. The wool fibers are matted together with moisture, heat and pressure, then formed and finished as a hat body.  Quality wool felt hats are markedly cheaper to produce than fur felt hats, and can be a great choice for a casual hat. Wool felt hats are warm, comfortable and generally less expensive than comparable fur felt hats.

A good wool felt hat can provide years of ordinary wear, but wool felt usually absorbs water more readily than fur felt and is more likely to shrink, soften or lose its shape if thoroughly soaked. 

Choose fur felt when you want the best in durability, rain or shine. Fur felt hats are more customizable, especially if you select an open crown hat and add your own bash. Choose wool felt when you want an attractive, warm hat for ordinary cool-weather use and do not expect it to endure prolonged rain or particularly hard treatment.

Fur felt generally costs more, but its longer useful life may make it the better value for someone who wears a hat frequently. Wool felt is a sensible choice for occasional wear or when a lower initial price is important.

A genuine Panama hat is handwoven in Ecuador from the leaves of the toquilla palm. Despite the name, Panama hats are, and have always been, made in Ecuador. The name became associated with the hats because they were shipped through Panama and were widely worn there during the construction of the Panama Canal.

The quality of a Panama depends on the fineness and regularity of the weave, the preparation of the straw and the skill of the weaver. All our Panama hats are handwoven in Ecuador, then blocked and trimmed in the USA or Slovakia.

List Panama Hats

No. Panama hats are designed for protection from the sun, not the rain. Do not wear them in the rain. Water can cause the straw to swell, stain, shrink or lose its blocked shape.

If you are caught in a rain shower, shake off the hat and leave it to dry naturally at room temperature. Support it so the crown and brim keep their shape. Do not use a hair dryer or place it near a heater.

Leather hats are well suited to rugged outdoor and casual wear. They stand up well to brush, dust and frequent handling, and many people appreciate the character the leather develops with age. They are useful for travel, field work and activities where a delicate straw hat would be impractical.

Leather is generally warmer and less breathable than Panama straw, so it may not be the coolest choice for very hot weather. Care and rain resistance vary according to the type of leather and finish, so follow the instructions supplied with the individual hat.

For most hat wearers, a well-made fur felt or leather hat will withstand the greatest amount of hard use. Fur felt has the advantage that it can often be cleaned, reblocked and renovated. Leather is highly resistant to abrasion but may eventually stiffen or dry if neglected.

Wool felt and Panama hats can also last for many years when used in suitable conditions. Their useful life is more easily shortened by soaking, crushing, heat or improper storage.

Quality fur felt is the best choice among the traditional hat materials we carry for regular wear in rain. Akubra fur felt hats are made to give years of service through sun and rain. Though a light shower will not penetrate the felt, during a long walk in a rainstorm the felt may absorb water. You will still be kept warm and dry beneath the hat, as it will not leak water.

Leather may also perform well in rain, depending on its finish. Wool felt is suitable for an occasional light shower but should not be saturated. Panama hats should be kept out of the rain.

A Panama is generally the coolest choice for hot, dry weather. Its light weight, breathable weave and broad shade make it an excellent summer hat.  Some of our cloth hats are also good summer hats.

Fur felt hats are more comfortable in heat than many people expect. The brim provides shade, only the sweatband touches the head, and the felt itself breathes. Generations of Australians have worn Akubras in the extreme heat of the Outback. Nevertheless, for the lightest possible summer hat, choose a Panama or another well-ventilated straw hat.

Akubra hats have earned a worldwide reputation for durability, practical design and distinctly Australian style. They are made to be worn by active outdoorspeople and to give full satisfaction during years of service through sun and rain.

At any price range, the sweatbands used by Akubra are hard to beat. Combined with strong fur felt and sound construction, they make an Akubra an excellent choice for a quality hat that will feel good and wear well.

Akubra makes its own fur felt from rabbit fur selected to suit the particular hat. The fine under-fur is cleaned, blended and felted into a cone. The felt body is repeatedly worked, dyed, blocked, sanded or “pounced,” and finished before the sweatband, lining and hatband are fitted.

The process requires considerable skill and many separate operations. Each hat is handcrafted in Australia.  It takes 6 weeks to make an Akubra hat. There are 162 steps in the process. Each hat is handled 200 times during manufacture, passing through 60 pairs of hands. Akubra has more than 150 years’ experience making hats and creating the fur felts used in them.

Yes. Durability is one of the principal reasons people choose an Akubra. Australians give hats rough treatment—fan the fire, water the dog or gather the chooks’ eggs—and an Akubra is expected to handle it all, day in and day out, year after year.

No felt hat is indestructible. Repeatedly pinching the crown can eventually crack the felt, and drying a wet hat with heat can shrink both the felt and the leather sweatband. With sensible care, an Akubra should provide many years of service.

Akubra fur felt hats are not damaged by water. Though a light shower will not penetrate the felt, during a good long walk in a rainstorm the felt will absorb water. This is not a problem. You will still be kept warm and dry beneath the hat, as the hat will not leak water.

Let a wet Akubra dry naturally at room temperature. Stand it on its crown if the brim shape permits, hang it on a broad hat hook, or support it on a clean box or shelf so its shape is not affected. Never put a wet hat near a stove, radiator or other source of heat.

The quality of felt in American Western hats is often designated by a number of X’s. There is no uniform standard for these ratings, and their meaning differs between manufacturers. An X rating from one company cannot reliably be compared with the same rating from another.

Akubra does not use X’s. It produces different types and finishes of felt, all made to Akubra’s own specifications. Akubra has more than 150 years' experience in creating the best fur felts possible for their hats.

An interesting difference between Akubras and American hats is that Akubra does not use hat powders to correct or even out the colors of the felt in their hats. The felt is dyed to produce the color required. The dyeing will leave slight variations in the final color of the felt. These variations are subtle, but in a manner similar to the subtle variations found in good leather, enhancing the character of the felt as a natural material.

Pliofelt is Akubra’s pliable fur felt, used in crushable hats such as the Traveller. It is made to be softer and more flexible than Akubra’s standard structured felt.

“Crushable” does not mean that a hat can be folded indefinitely without showing wear. Pack it with care, avoid making a sharp crease, and allow it to return to its natural shape after travel.

Akubra, Stetson and Resistol all make great hats. We feel Akubra hats compare very well for durability and quality of fur felt. At any price range, the sweatbands used by Akubra are hard to beat, making an Akubra an excellent choice for a quality hat that will feel great and wear well.

American Western hats tend to follow changes in the Western fashion market. Akubra has a different approach, stressing quality and functionality over trends. The dash and flair of an Akubra are uniquely Australian and recognized throughout the world.

An open-crown hat is supplied with the crown in its original rounded shape, without a permanent crease or bash. This allows the wearer to create a center crease, teardrop, telescope, diamond or another shape according to personal preference.

Yes. Fur felt responds readily to steam, and minor adjustments to the crown or brim can often be made at home. Work gradually and use only enough steam to soften the felt. Avoid soaking the hat, and keep steam away from the leather sweatband as much as possible.  See our Hat Manual for further information.

For a major change, a badly distorted hat or a valuable older hat, consult a professional hatter or hat renovator. A good fur felt hat can often be cleaned, reblocked and given a new lease on life.

Consider the brim width, crown height, ventilation, weight and intended use. A broad brim gives greater protection from sun and rain. A medium brim is easier in town and in a vehicle. A high crown provides more room above the head, while a low crown may suit a smaller face but should not touch the top of the wearer’s head.

List Akubra Hats

No. Akubra makes a wide range of styles and colors for Australia and other markets. It is not practical for us to bring every one into the United States. We select styles that we believe will suit our customers and try to stock a useful range of the best shapes, colors and sizes.

It is generally not practical for us to obtain an Akubra we do not carry as a special order. It may take four months or more to arrive, and if the size, color or shape proves wrong, we would be unable to exchange it. Chances are that we offer a style similar to the one you have in mind.

Measure around your head with a cloth measuring tape, placing the tape where the hat will sit. This is usually just above the eyebrows and ears and around the widest part at the back of the head. Hold the tape firmly but not tightly, and measure more than once.

Not necessarily. Sizes may vary between manufacturers, and an older hat may have stretched, shrunk or conformed to your head. Australian, American and European size markings can also be confusing.

The correct size is essential for comfortable wearing and enjoyment of a hat. A properly fitted hat should sit securely without causing pressure or a headache. It should not fall down over the ears or lift off in an ordinary breeze.

A new fur felt hat may feel slightly rigid and then conform to the wearer with use. It should not be painfully tight. Check the fit when the hat first arrives, before removing tags, shaping an open crown or wearing the hat outdoors. Detailed instructions are given on our Hat Sizing page.

Hats purchased from us in unused condition can be returned for exchange or refund within 90 days of purchase. Please follow the instructions for returning merchandise, indicating the correct size or other adjustment needed.

Heads come in all shapes, and sometimes felt pads strategically placed between the sweatband and hat crown will turn a poor fit into a great fit. If you are unsure what is needed, phone us before sending the hat back so we can help.

Place one or more felt hat pads beneath the sweatband where extra support is needed. We enclose felt pads with our Akubra and Panama hats. The pads can be placed at the front and back for a long-oval head, at the sides for a rounder head, or wherever they give the most even fit.

The old-timers’ method of placing folded dollar bills under the sweatband will also work if no felt pads are available. This method has the added advantage of equipping the wearer with a source of emergency cash!

A hat may also feel loose because a low crown touches the top of the head before the sweatband seats properly. Push out the crown and try the hat again. If it fits with the crown pushed out, the crown may need to be raised slightly rather than the hat made smaller.

First determine whether the hat is too small all around or simply does not match the shape of your head. A hat that pinches at the front and back but feels loose at the sides may be too round for a long-oval head. A hat that presses at the sides may be too oval.

A fur felt hat may ease and conform with ordinary wear. A hat stretcher can help maintain the size and may make a modest adjustment. Do not force a hat several sizes larger, and do not use excessive heat or steam. A hat that is distinctly too small should be exchanged.

A quality fur felt hat can often be resized by a professional hatter, usually by approximately one size smaller or larger. The result depends on the hat, sweatband, crown and amount of material available.

Wool felt is less forgiving and may not respond as well to substantial resizing. Panama hats may sometimes be adjusted slightly, but attempts to stretch dry straw can crack it. Discuss any significant alteration with a hatter or renovator before buying a hat that is not your size.

These terms describe the shape of the head as viewed from above. A long-oval head is longer from front to back and narrower from side to side. A round-oval head is comparatively wider. Most manufactured hats are blocked to a regular oval intended to suit the greatest number of people.

Fur felt is adaptable and will often conform to differences in head shape with wearing. Felt pads can improve the fit of a slightly loose hat. A pronounced difference in shape may require adjustment by a hatter.

We carry size 63 (7-7/8) and smaller in most of our Akubras. Akubra is no longer routinely manufacturing size 64 (8) hats. Panama hats are carried in sizes up to 7-3/4 (62) or 7-7/8 (63), depending on the style.

Few people require a hat as large as 7-7/8, so do not casually order one merely because you have a large head. Many hat stores do not carry sizes over 7-5/8 (61). Measure your head and check our hat size chart. If you need a size above 7-7/8, you may need a custom hatter.

Yes. You may return or exchange a hat within the terms of our guarantee. It must be unused and returned within 90 days of purchase in the shape and condition in which it was sent, with all tags attached.

Do not wear it outdoors, allow it to become dirty, shape the crown of an open-crown hat or reshape the crown or brim of a hat you may return. Try it on indoors, and if the fit is not right, repack it promptly.

Brush off dust before it becomes worked into the material, and deal with spots when they occur. A hat worn every day will need attention more often than one worn occasionally. Frequent gentle care is better than aggressive cleaning after dirt has accumulated.

Always use a method suitable for the material. Fur felt, wool felt, Panama straw and leather should not all be cleaned in the same way.

Use a soft hat brush and brush gently in the direction of the nap, usually counter-clockwise. On most felt hats this means working counterclockwise around the crown and along the upper surface of the brim. A clean hat sponge may help remove light marks.

Avoid soaking the felt with household cleaners. Grease, perspiration stains or deeply embedded dirt are best handled by a professional hat cleaner or renovator. Detailed information is given on our Hat Care page and in our Hat Manual.

Brush a wool felt hat gently with a soft hat brush. Work with the nap and avoid vigorous rubbing, which can roughen the surface. A clean, dry cloth or hat sponge may remove light marks.

Do not soak wool felt or scrub it with water. Wool absorbs moisture readily and may shrink, soften or lose its blocked shape. For serious stains, use a professional cleaner familiar with hats.

Remove loose dust with a clean, soft brush or cloth. Light surface marks may sometimes be lifted with a slightly damp white cloth, but do not saturate the straw. Avoid strong cleaners, which can discolor or weaken the fibers.

Handle a Panama by the brim rather than repeatedly pinching the front of the crown. Natural straw becomes more brittle when very dry, and repeated pinching at the same point is a common cause of cracking.

The light marks are what we call packing marks. Packing marks are caused by the crown protector vibrating against the brim near the crown as the hat travels across country. They are readily removed with rain, brushing, or just time as the nap of the felt settles into a normal or average pattern.

To remove them immediately, simply steam the packing marks using a hat steamer or tea kettle. For more information on steaming your hat, please read our Hat Care instructions.

A quality fur felt hat such as an Akubra may be worn confidently in the rain. Wool felt will tolerate an occasional light shower but should not be thoroughly soaked. Panama hats are intended for sun, not rain. The suitability of a leather hat depends on the type of leather and its finish.

Whatever the material, never dry a wet hat with direct heat. Let it dry naturally at room temperature, supported so that its shape is not affected.

Steam is useful for removing packing marks and making small adjustments to a fur felt crown or brim. Hold the hat in the steam only until the felt becomes pliable, shape it gently, and let it cool and dry in the desired position.

Keep your hands and face clear of escaping steam. Avoid steaming the leather sweatband, as heat and moisture may cause it to shrink. Use very little steam on wool felt, and do not steam a Panama unless you understand how the particular hat was blocked. Major work is best left to a professional hatter.

Minor changes to a fur felt hat can usually be made with steam. Open-crown Akubras are specifically intended to receive the wearer’s choice of bash. Detailed instructions are given on our Bashing Your Open Crown Akubra page.

Wool felt is less resilient and should be reshaped cautiously. Panama straw can crack if bent when too dry. A severely crushed, shrunken or distorted hat should be taken to a hat renovator.

Store a hat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. A hat box provides the best protection from dust and accidental crushing. A broad hat hook is also suitable for many hats.

Do not leave a hat on a narrow peg that may dent the crown, and do not leave it for long periods on a flat surface if this changes the brim. If a hat must be stored under warm, dry conditions, regular use of a hat stretcher may be beneficial.

The safest method is to wear the hat or carry it in a proper hat box. When traveling by air, do not place a structured felt or Panama hat loose in an overhead compartment where luggage may crush it.

A hat described as crushable may be packed for a limited time, but avoid making a sharp fold and do not place heavy objects on it. Stuff the crown lightly with clean clothing and support the brim with soft items around it. Unpack the hat as soon as practical.

Some quality hats do. We regularly see old Akubra hats that have given decades of service. Whether a particular hat lasts a lifetime depends on how often it is worn, the conditions it encounters and the care it receives.

Do not pick up a felt hat by repeatedly pinching the crown. Pinching flexes the same area and may eventually cause a hole or crack. Pick it up by the front and back of the brim, or place your thumbs inside the sweatband at the sides with your fingers just touching the brim.

A worn quality hat may be worth renovating. Cleaning, a new sweatband and reblocking can sometimes restore a sound fur felt hat for many more years of use.

You may return or exchange merchandise in unused condition within 90 days of purchase. A returned hat must be in the shape and condition in which it was sent, with all tags attached.

Try the hat on indoors as soon as it arrives. If the size is wrong, do not wear it outdoors or alter it. Repack it carefully and return it according to our instructions, indicating the size you would like in exchange.

If you are uncertain which size is needed, phone us before returning the hat. We can often help determine whether the problem is the size, the shape of the head or the height of the crown.

No. A hat being returned or exchanged must be unused. Wearing a hat outdoors may expose it to perspiration, hair products, dust, rain or other marks that prevent us from selling it as new.

Keep all tags attached and do not shape an open crown or alter the brim until you are sure you will keep the hat.

Return the hat in the box and packing materials in which it arrived. Replace the crown support and other packing so the hat cannot move about or be crushed in transit. Do not force a broad brim into a box that is too small.

Please follow our detailed Repacking Your Akubra Hat instructions. A hat damaged because it was returned without adequate protection may not qualify for a full refund or exchange.

No. We are unable to exchange goods that were not originally purchased from us. Check first with the seller. If the seller cannot help, a custom hatter or renovator may be able to resize or reshape the hat.

If the hat was brought back from Australia, shipping it to the original store may be costly and awkward. Another time-honored solution is to give it to a friend whose head fits it and buy the correct size for yourself. A gift of an Akubra will be appreciated for years to come.

Generally, no. A special-order Akubra may take four months or more to obtain. If the size, color or shape is wrong, we may be unable to exchange it. We try to carry a good range of the best shapes and colors, and chances are that one of our regular styles will meet the need.

A hat renovator is a specialist who cleans, repairs, blocks and reshapes hats. A renovator may be able to replace a sweatband, resize a quality hat, remove stains or restore a crown and brim that have lost their shape.

Akubra and other manufacturers also make products for different countries and markets. Some styles are not regularly available to us, while others are too similar to hats already in our range.

Available sizes are determined in part by the manufacturer. Some hat bodies and styles cannot be made successfully in the smallest or largest sizes. Manufacturers may also discontinue sizes for which worldwide demand is very limited.

We stock the broadest practical range for each style. The available sizes are shown on the product page. Please do not guess at an unusually large or small size; measure your head and consult our Hat Sizing page.

As with all our goods, our prices are set to give you good value all the time and do not permit us to put regular items on sale. Whether you shop online, through our print catalog or in our retail store, our prices are the same.

If you live in, or are visiting, the greater Seattle area, we sometimes have reject Akubra hats available in our retail store. Of the thousands of Akubras we sell, these are the few hats that slip through Akubra’s excellent quality control or are damaged in shipment.

Most have only small flaws or defects and are offered at very reasonable prices. Reject hats are available only in our retail store. They are not sold online or by telephone, and there are no returns or exchanges.

The Cattleman, the hat made by Akubra for the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, was chosen because it typifies the hats used by cattlemen in Australia.

The Akubra most often worn by Adam Savage is the Bushman, an open-crown Akubra. The Bushman is not currently being manufactured by Akubra; the Campdraft is similar.

Akubra supplied close to 450 hats to the producers of the movie Australia. Many of the hats were custom made by Akubra, then custom shaped and trimmed by Rosie Boylan.

As Stephen Keir, Akubra’s Managing Director, said: “We sent fresh, new open crowned hats off and they then had to make them look like they’d been worn through anything from war to years in the outback. Our hats are renowned for their durability so I’m sure ageing them was an art in itself.”

Nicole Kidman wore several hats, including the Squatter. The Squatter shape is similar to the Campdraft. Hugh Jackman’s hat was custom made with a pencil-roll brim. Many Aussie Slouch Hats were worn in scenes depicting Australian troops. Snowy River hats took their parts among the Outback shapes appearing in droving scenes. The Sydney Fedora was among the other Akubra hats provided for city scenes.

No, but we do carry the Adventurer by Akubra, in the same general shape, style and color as the fedora worn by Indiana Jones in the movies. The hat worn by Indiana Jones was custom made.

The Akubra Campdraft is also basically a similar shape. The Adventurer is an open-crown hat, allowing you to customize it with your own style of bash, such as the Indy bash.

No. Crocodile Dundee wore the Down Under in black. Akubra no longer manufactures the Down Under. The hatband worn in the movie was crocodile leather with crocodile teeth. In later television advertisements, fabric bands were used on the Down Under.

If you want a similar look, begin with a black Snowy River and a suitable hatband. Although the Snowy River has a pinched telescope crown and the Down Under had a round telescope crown, the look is similar.

No. The Bush Tucker Man wears the Sombrero in the Fawn color, which we no longer carry. We suggest The Strand Hatters as a possible source. Be sure to check shipping costs, tariffs, duty and return policies before buying.

This hat comes with an open crown, ready for you to put in the bash yourself. While putting in the bash is half the fun, this type of bash is not the easiest to make. If you do not wish to do it yourself, find a photograph of the hat and take it to a local hat shop or renovator. Stay with them while they shape it, as the bash comes very close to the head but should not touch the head.

No. Both hats are open-crown hats, giving you the ability to personalize them with your own bash. The Bushman has a 3-1/4-inch snap brim with a bound edge, whereas the Campdraft brim is narrower at 2-7/8 inches, or 73 mm.

The Bushman was among the early Akubras we introduced in the United States in the mid-1970s. It is not currently being manufactured by Akubra.
