  • More Info
Woolly mammoth ivory is still found in the permafrost of North America and Siberia. It is identical to the ivory of elephants, hippopotami and walruses but it does not threaten any living species. Most mammoth ivory is over ten thousand years old, since the end of the ice age, thus making it rare and expensive. Like elephant and walrus ivory, it is valued by carvers, scrimshanders and jewelry makers. Woolly mammoth ivory is Alaska's state fossil.

Alaska has large deposits of jade, including Jade Mountain in the Seward Peninsula, a mountain of solid jade. The Inuit have carved and traded jade, valued for its luminescent colors and smooth surfaces, for centuries. Most Alaskan jade is found in the form of smooth boulders or stones in riverbeds. Jade is Alaska's state stone.
