Who Says Fedoras Are Only for Men?

February 14, 2013

There’s no question that Akubras look classic and stylish on men. But they also look great on women! We’ve already mentioned The Hampton, but other hats look great, too. We have several open-crown hats that you can crease yourself, or keep them uncreased, such as with The Adventurer, below. Our open-crown hats include The Sydney, The Bushman and The Slouch.

If you’re looking for a straw hat, our Gambler has a telescope crown, which you may find more interesting than our straw fedoras.

WESA 2013 a Great Success!

February 1, 2013

The Western and English Sales Association convention in Denver was a tremendous success. This year, Alex and Mike took reins of the booth. They met a few of our vendors and met some new wholesale customers that we’ll be excited to do business with.

Join Us at WESA

January 11, 2013

David Morgan is attending the January WESA (Western and English Sales Association) convention in Denver, CO.  The Denver WESA Market is the premier trade show for the western industry.  For 90 years, WESA has brought together retailers and exhibitors in a friendly, down-home environment.

Join us if you happen to be at the show!

One friend that we’ve made from our years at WESA is Tom Mosher. Tom is a writer of western poetry. His latest poem includes Akubra hats, so we thought we’d post it. Enjoy!

THE TRUE MEASURE

“Of a cowboys treasure”

HIS BOOTS WERE COMFORTABLY OLD

WHY THEY’D TWICE BEEN RESOLED

THEY WERE SPECIAL MADE FROM DOWN TUCSON WAY

HE ALWAYS WENT FOR QUALITY, HE WOULD SAY

THERE WERE SEVERAL FINE HATS, HUNG ON HIS RACK

HIS FAVORITE CAME FROM AUSTRALIA, A AKUBRA – KIANDRA IN BLACK

THAT OLD HAT SHOWED YEARS OF USE

NOTHING HE OWNED SHOWED ABUSE

NOW THIS COWBOY HAD MORE TO TREASURE

TWO WELL WORN SADDLES, THAT GAVE HIM PLEASURE

AND THERE WAS A LOADED FORD PICK-EM UP TRUCK

TWAS NICE TO HAVE A RIDE THAT DIDN’T BUCK

BUT OF ALL THOSE WORLDY TREASURES

THERES ONLY TWO THAT TRULY MEASURES

HIS RED-HEADED LADY AND A STRAWBERRY ROAN

FOR WITH OUT THEM, HE WOULD TRULY BE ALONE

Heathergems: a Christmas Treasure

November 16, 2012

Our latest jewelry comes from the hills of Scotland, where the purple blooms of heather decorate the landscape. Heathergems are made from this well-loved plant, which is dyed and blocked into unique color patterns.

Each Heathergem is handcrafted in Pitlochry, Scotland. The heather used is too old to provide any nutrition for wildlife and is pulled in a manner which promotes the growth of new plants.

The stems are dried, shotblasted to remove the bark and dyed various colors using natural dyes. Stems of different colors are then mixed together and compressed into a block. Eighty tons of pressure is required to press the block of stems together.

The block is then cut into slices and individual pieces are cut, shaped and filed by skilled craftworkers before being lacquered to give the final finish. The Heathergem jewelry we offer are set into sterling silver fittings. Each piece comes gift boxed, with a card explaining the process used to create Heathergems.

This is a wonderfully unique Christmas gift.

The Artful Traveller, Courtesy of Corrine Hunt

October 26, 2012

Corrine Hunt, co-designer of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics medals, is a First Nation Komoyue and Tlingit. Her art reflects the themes and traditions of her heritage, bringing the stories of her First Nations culture to the modern world. “I want to show how both the First Nations people and the art have evolved,” she explains.

Corrine’s work is not overly ornate. She conveys her message using as few lines as possible.

David Morgan carries two leather travel bags by Corrine.

The Solo Bag

A raven is embossed on the front. The tan colored bag is made of soft and supple deerskin while the black is made of cow leather. It’s perfect for carrying the little essentials. The main compartment has a zip closure and an open interior pocket. There is one exterior pocket which snaps shut.

The Hampton: A Lady’s Akubra

October 12, 2012

Get ready for fall and winter with a head warmer that is classic and stylish. The Hampton is ideal for women, especially petites. With its narrow brim and shorter crown, it adds elegance without being overwhelming.

The grosgrain ribbon is easily removable. Try adding your own colors, such as gold and orange for fall. And for winter, use a rich, deep blue.

Profiles in Craftsmanship: Cavin Richie

September 21, 2012

David Morgan is proud to carry jewelry designed by Cavin Richie. After we started offering his pieces in 2008, they quickly became one of our top sellers.

It is easy to see why. The attention to detail is superb. Cavin captures the details of each animal: the feathers of a hummingbird in flight for example, or the wings of a dragonfly.

The earrings featured in the video are the Hummingbird Heart Earrings.

Hampton and Adventurer in Black Now Available

September 7, 2012

We’re very pleased to present two new hats from David Morgan.

The Hampton is the latest addition to our fedora collection. It has the narrowest brim yet, stretching to only 1 3/4 inches. And, befitting of a city hat, the brim is finished. The crown is 4 inches at the front, rising to 4 1/2 inches in the center and dropping to 3 3/4 inches in the back. A 1 1/2 inch grosgrain ribbon finishes off the hat. The color is a deep, rich Cedar Brown. More here.

The Adventurer, our popular Indiana Jones hat, has long been available in brown. We now have it in black. The open crown is 5 1/2 inches, the brim is 3-1/8 inches on the front and back, 2-3/4 inches on the sides. Raw-edged brim. More here.
